INDIA OFFERS NO TIMELINE ON BANGLADESH’S REQUEST FOR SHEIKH HASINA’S EXTRADITION
October 3, 2026
NEW DELHI — India has not provided a specific timeframe for responding to Bangladesh’s request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi saying that the matter remains under consideration.
Trivedi said India could not provide a definite timeline regarding the request, indicating that the issue would be handled through the established legal and diplomatic processes.
Bangladesh has sought Hasina’s extradition after she left the country in August 2024 following the fall of her government amid widespread protests. The request has remained a sensitive issue in relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The extradition question involves legal procedures as well as the bilateral framework governing cooperation between India and Bangladesh. Any decision would therefore depend on the examination of the request and the applicable provisions.
For now, New Delhi has not committed to a specific date for a response, leaving the status of the extradition request unresolved.
