INDIA SHIFTS FROM DIPLOMATIC APPEALS TO ACTIVE OUTREACH IN UKRAINE PEACE EFFORT

NEW DELHI — India is moving beyond simply advocating dialogue in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and is now engaging directly with both Kyiv and Moscow in an effort to contribute to ending the prolonged war, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said.

Jaishankar indicated that India’s approach has evolved as the conflict has continued, with New Delhi maintaining communication with both sides rather than aligning itself exclusively with either camp.

India has consistently argued that a lasting settlement can emerge only through dialogue and diplomacy. Its relationship with Russia, combined with expanding strategic ties with Ukraine and Western countries, has allowed New Delhi to maintain channels with competing sides of the conflict.

The minister’s remarks underline India’s attempt to position itself as a constructive participant in peace efforts while protecting its own strategic interests. New Delhi has repeatedly maintained that it is willing to support any credible initiative capable of reducing hostilities and creating conditions for negotiations.

India’s engagement with Moscow and Kyiv also reflects its broader diplomatic strategy of maintaining relationships across geopolitical divisions. Rather than limiting its role to public calls for peace, New Delhi is seeking opportunities for direct communication that could help narrow differences between the warring parties.

The latest position reinforces India’s growing diplomatic ambition in the conflict, with the government seeking to use its ties with both Russia and Ukraine to encourage a negotiated end to the war.
