Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is in good health and recovering well after being injured during a violent cockpit confrontation aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said Machchhar was receiving medical care following the incident and that his condition was stable. Embassy officials have remained in contact with him and local authorities after the aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk.

Machchhar was commanding flight FZ1073 when the co-pilot allegedly attacked him with a knife while the aircraft was cruising at around 30,000 feet. The confrontation reportedly caused the aircraft to enter a steep descent, creating an emergency for everyone aboard.

Despite sustaining injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and assist in restraining the attacker. Other pilots travelling on the aircraft also helped the flight crew regain control.

The Boeing 737, carrying 174 people, was diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely. The passengers were subsequently accommodated and arrangements were made for their onward journey to Tel Aviv.

The co-pilot was taken into custody by Saudi authorities as investigations began into the circumstances and motive behind the attack. Authorities are also examining whether the incident was planned and whether any wider security concerns were involved.

Machchhar’s recovery has been closely followed in India after political leaders and officials across the country praised his actions during the emergency. His successful handling of the crisis has also drawn international attention to the role of cockpit crews in preventing potentially catastrophic aviation incidents.
