IRAN INSISTS ON DIPLOMACY AFTER TRUMP REJECTS HORMUZ PEACE PROPOSAL

Iran has reiterated that a negotiated settlement is the only way to resolve its conflict with the United States and Israel after US President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the fighting. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said reopening the strategic waterway would depend on Iran’s conditions being met.

Iran presented the proposal during the United Nations General Assembly in New York and said it had been conveyed to Washington through Qatari mediators. Under the proposed framework, an agreement could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a pause in regional hostilities, followed by broader negotiations between the two sides.

Trump said he had rejected the proposal, arguing that Iran was seeking an immediate reopening of the waterway because of the economic and military pressure it was facing. Despite his rejection, Trump said US negotiators were expected to hold further talks during the week, leaving diplomatic contacts open.

Araqchi said Iranian officials had not yet received formal confirmation from the mediators that Washington had definitively rejected the proposal. Tehran is awaiting the mediators’ communication of the US position before deciding its next steps. The two sides also remain divided over Iran’s nuclear programme and other conditions for a broader settlement.
