ISRAELI STRIKE KILLS HAMAS NORTHERN GAZA COMMANDER IN GAZA CITY
September 29, 2026
Izz al-Din al-Beik, identified by Israeli and Palestinian sources as the head of Hamas’s armed wing in northern Gaza, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Tuesday, September 29. The strike hit an apartment building in the Nasr neighbourhood, according to medical sources and Hamas officials.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said the military had targeted al-Beik, whom they accused of involvement in planning attacks and recruiting fighters. Hamas subsequently confirmed his death, according to Reuters, while medical officials reported that another person also died from injuries sustained in the strike.
Al-Beik had taken command of Hamas’s northern Gaza brigade following the death of senior commander Ahmed al-Ghandour in 2023. Earlier in May, Israel had also claimed that al-Beik was targeted in an airstrike, although his death was not confirmed at that time.
The latest strike comes amid continuing Israeli military operations in Gaza despite a US-brokered ceasefire arrangement. Israel has accused Hamas of rearming and violating the ceasefire, while Hamas has denied those allegations and accused Israel of undermining the agreement.
