Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee has ordered a non-teaching staff member to stay away from the campus after a first-year undergraduate student accused him of sexually harassing her inside Technology Bhavan. The university has referred the complaint to its Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) for investigation and further action.
According to the complaint submitted to the vice-chancellor, the alleged incident occurred around 3.20 pm on Friday, October 30, on the sixth floor of Technology Bhavan. The employee, who is attached to the university's Mathematics Department, allegedly approached three students sitting on the staircase of the seventh floor and asked them to leave the area.
While two students went downstairs, the employee allegedly approached the complainant, sought her personal details and took her to the sixth floor, reportedly showing her several locked rooms. The student alleged that the employee touched her inappropriately as she was preparing to leave. She subsequently managed to leave the spot and informed her friends about the incident.
The students later confronted the employee, who denied the allegations and maintained that he had been falsely implicated. He reportedly argued that the students had been occupying a restricted area and that he had maintained sufficient distance during their interaction.
Following the complaint, Vice-Chancellor Bhattacharjee directed the university registrar to prohibit the accused employee from entering the campus until the ICC completes its investigation. The university has initiated the process of examining the allegations through its internal complaints mechanism.
The incident has also raised concerns about campus security and surveillance facilities. Students have alleged that the sixth and seventh floors of Technology Bhavan do not have CCTV coverage, prompting questions about monitoring arrangements in parts of the academic building.
The university's inquiry is expected to examine the complaint and the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident. The accused employee's denial and the student's allegations will form part of the investigation.
