JAISHANKAR WARNS OF RISING GLOBAL INSTABILITY AS CONFLICTS AND ECONOMIC PRESSURES DEEPEN

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has warned that the international system is facing mounting instability as wars, geopolitical competition and the growing use of economic and technological instruments as strategic leverage place additional pressure on global institutions.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, Jaishankar said persistent conflicts and continuous threats were creating an increasingly uncertain international environment. He stressed that peace should involve more than the absence of armed conflict and called for greater stability, security and predictability.

Jaishankar also criticised what he described as the “weaponisation of everything”, pointing to pressures involving finance, market access, supply chains and technology. According to him, these developments have encouraged countries to reduce their vulnerabilities and diversify their sources of supply, while weakening trust and cooperation between nations.

The minister further highlighted the wider consequences of ongoing wars, particularly disruptions to energy, food and fertiliser supplies. He noted that countries distant from conflict zones can also face economic and supply-chain consequences despite having no direct involvement in the fighting.

Jaishankar urged the international community to recognise these interconnected challenges and strengthen international cooperation to prevent further deterioration of global stability.
