KYIV COMES UNDER ANOTHER MISSILE BARRAGE AS RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR RAGES DESPITE FRESH PEACE EFFORTS
October 22, 2026
KYIV, OCTOBER 22, 2026 — Missiles struck Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in the early hours of Thursday, a Reuters witness reported, as Russian and Ukrainian forces continued exchanging attacks despite renewed diplomatic efforts to bring the war to an end.
The latest missile strike followed a Russian air attack on Kyiv on Wednesday evening that injured six people and damaged residential homes, a petrol station and transport equipment, according to Ukrainian officials. The fresh overnight assault underscored the continuing threat to the capital as the conflict entered another phase of intensified long-range attacks.
In Russia, Ukrainian drones struck apartment buildings and a medical facility in the city of Lipetsk, injuring one man, regional governor Igor Artamonov said. Lipetsk lies approximately 400 kilometres south of Moscow and is home to a major steel plant.
The attacks came as US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to mediate an end to the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Despite the diplomatic engagement, the continuing strikes highlighted the considerable distance between efforts to restart negotiations and the military realities on the ground. Both sides have continued to employ missiles and drones against targets across the front lines and far beyond them.
For Kyiv, repeated missile attacks have kept civilians under the threat of further destruction, while damage to homes and transport infrastructure has added to the pressures faced by residents. In Russia, Ukrainian drone operations have increasingly brought the effects of the war to urban areas away from the front.
The latest developments demonstrate the difficulties confronting international mediators seeking a negotiated settlement. While discussions between Washington, Moscow and Kyiv offer a potential avenue towards renewed talks, the continuing exchange of attacks shows that a diplomatic breakthrough remains uncertain.
As the war continues, civilians in both countries remain exposed to the consequences of aerial strikes, while the prospects for a lasting peace depend on whether diplomatic initiatives can translate into concrete agreements to halt the fighting.
