ISLAMABAD: At least 11 people were killed and 30 others injured after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into a police checkpoint in Dera Ismail Khan district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, emergency service Rescue 1122 said. Several of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
The vehicle struck the checkpoint before exploding, causing casualties in the northwestern district, according to emergency officials. The injured were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement. The group is distinct from Afghanistan’s Taliban but has maintained an alliance with it.
The attack adds to continuing militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region that has experienced repeated attacks targeting Pakistani security forces. Further details about the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding the attack were not immediately available.
