SEVERE FLOODS IN THAILAND INUNDATE HOMES AS BANGKOK FACES WIDESPREAD WATERLOGGING
September 28, 2026
Heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding across Thailand, inundating homes, roads and commercial areas and forcing thousands of residents to seek shelter. Bangkok has been among the worst-affected areas, with prolonged downpours overwhelming drainage systems and disrupting transport across several parts of the capital.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration declared all 50 districts of the capital flood disaster zones after more than 330 mm of rain was recorded in some areas between Thursday and Sunday. Nearly 4,900 people had been evacuated to shelters, while around 52,000 households were reported to have been affected by the flooding.
The flooding has also affected large parts of the country. Reuters reported on Monday that floods since September 16 had affected more than 580,000 homes across 41 provinces and resulted in at least eight deaths. More than 80,000 residents in flooded areas were reportedly unable to leave their homes as authorities deployed boats, mobile kitchens and other emergency assistance.
In Bangkok's heavily affected neighbourhoods, residents have been seen wading through deep floodwaters to obtain essential supplies. Some vendors adapted by operating makeshift floating stalls using plastic containers and drums, creating what local reports described as a temporary floating market amid the inundation.
Authorities have continued drainage and evacuation efforts as further rainfall remained possible. The flooding has disrupted daily life and raised concerns over the economic impact, with preliminary estimates cited by Reuters putting nationwide losses at more than 11 billion baht.
