TRUMP DENIES OFFERING IRAN SANCTIONS RELIEF AS INDIRECT CEASEFIRE TALKS CONTINUE

September 29, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump has denied reports that his administration offered Iran sanctions relief and access to frozen Iranian funds in exchange for concessions on Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Trump rejected the report on Monday, stating that he had offered Iran “nothing.” His denial came as U.S. and Iranian officials continued separate discussions through mediators in an effort to revive negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.

The reported proposal had suggested possible sanctions relief and access to frozen assets in return for concrete progress on Iran’s nuclear programme. Trump’s denial followed reports describing the possibility of such an arrangement, while the details and scope of any proposals under discussion remain contested.

Iran has meanwhile put forward a seven-day proposal involving a cessation of hostilities, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the resumption of nuclear negotiations. Tehran has linked the reopening of the strategic waterway to conditions including the lifting of the U.S. blockade and sanctions on Iranian oil.

Qatar and other mediators have been involved in efforts to facilitate communication between Washington and Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has said that Iran is awaiting a formal U.S. response to its latest proposal, while Trump has indicated that further discussions could take place this week.

The competing accounts over sanctions relief come as diplomatic efforts continue alongside the unresolved dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for international energy shipments.
