TRUMP LABELS HORMUZ ‘TRUMP STRAIT’ AFTER REPORTEDLY REJECTING IRAN CEASEFIRE PLAN

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has shared a map on Truth Social depicting the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait”, shortly after reports that he rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the strategic waterway within seven days and halt fighting in the region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had proposed reopening normal maritime passage through the strait within seven days if Washington lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waived sanctions affecting Iranian oil exports and observed a ceasefire extending to Lebanon. He said the seven-day timeline would begin once the United States accepted the proposal.

Reports citing US officials said Trump rejected the proposal and remained sceptical that Tehran would meet Washington’s demands. Trump has also reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon, while reports indicated that renewed US military strikes remained a possibility.

Trump had previously posted a map in August suggesting that the Strait of Hormuz could become “New US Territory” and said the United States had control of the waterway through its naval blockade. The latest post comes as the strait remains a major point of contention in the US-Iran confrontation and a crucial route for global energy shipments.
