TRUMP REJECTS IRANIAN PROPOSAL TO REOPEN HORMUZ AND END FIGHTING

CAIRO: Iran was awaiting a formal response from Washington on Saturday after US President Donald Trump rejected a proposal from Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days and halt fighting across the wider Middle East, according to Reuters. The proposal had been conveyed to the United States through mediators during diplomatic contacts surrounding the UN General Assembly.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had presented a concrete seven-day plan under which normal maritime traffic through the strategic waterway could resume if the necessary conditions were met. Iran has sought an end to the US naval blockade of its ports and the easing of sanctions affecting its oil exports, with broader negotiations potentially following the reopening of the strait.

The Wall Street Journal initially reported that Trump had rejected the proposal and remained sceptical that Tehran would meet US demands. Trump subsequently confirmed to reporters that he had rejected the Iranian offer, saying Tehran wanted a deal to reopen the strait.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran remained open to negotiations but had lost trust in Washington following previous developments. Iranian officials have said the proposal could also lead to renewed discussions on the country's nuclear programme and a broader cessation of hostilities in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the dispute because of its importance to global energy shipments. The latest diplomatic setback leaves the future of negotiations and maritime traffic through the waterway uncertain as Tehran awaits Washington's next steps.
