TRUMP WARNS OF SEVERE RESPONSE IF IRAN IS LINKED TO FLYDUBAI ATTACK
October 2, 2026
US President Donald Trump has warned that Iran would face a severe response if investigators establish that Tehran was connected to the attempted takeover of a Flydubai passenger aircraft bound for Israel. His remarks came as investigators in several countries continued examining the motive and possible background of the co-pilot accused of attacking the captain during the flight.
Trump said US authorities were examining information about a possible Iranian connection but did not provide evidence to support the suggestion. He indicated that Washington would take strong action if such a link were established, adding to tensions surrounding an already volatile regional situation.
The incident involved Flydubai flight FZ1073 travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The Omani co-pilot allegedly stabbed Indian Captain Smit Machchhar in the cockpit, after which the aircraft experienced a dramatic descent. Passengers and other crew members managed to enter the cockpit and restrain the attacker, while additional crew helped regain control of the aircraft.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 eventually made an emergency landing at Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia. More than 180 people were aboard, with the majority reportedly Israeli passengers. Machchhar was injured during the confrontation and later received medical treatment.
Investigators have not yet established a definitive motive or confirmed any connection between the suspect and Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the co-pilot appeared to have undergone Islamist radicalisation, while acknowledging that it remained too early to determine whether he had links to Iran or another organisation.
Authorities in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Israel are involved in examining the incident, with the UAE launching its own investigation because the aircraft is registered there. Possible explanations, including terrorism and other motives, remain under examination.
Trump’s warning comes as diplomatic efforts involving Washington and Tehran face renewed difficulties and US military forces are being deployed in greater numbers to the Middle East. Any verified evidence connecting Iran to the aviation incident could therefore carry wider regional consequences, but investigators have yet to establish such a connection.
