YEMEN ESCALATES MILITARY CAMPAIGN AS HOUTHI PRESSURE GROWS AROUND BAB EL-MANDEB

October 4, 2026

SANA’A — Yemen’s internationally recognised government has launched a major military offensive against Houthi forces as the rebels strengthen their position around the strategically vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The renewed campaign marks a significant escalation in Yemen’s prolonged conflict and comes amid growing concerns over control of the maritime passage linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

Government forces are seeking to push back Houthi fighters and regain strategic positions, while the rebels continue to maintain a strong presence across large parts of northern and western Yemen.

The Bab el-Mandeb has become one of the most sensitive flashpoints in the wider Middle East crisis because of its importance to international shipping. Any prolonged military confrontation around the waterway could increase security risks for commercial vessels and further disrupt regional trade.

The offensive also threatens to deepen Yemen’s already severe humanitarian and political crisis. Years of conflict have left the country divided between rival authorities, while repeated attempts to achieve a lasting political settlement have struggled to produce a durable resolution.

With fighting once again intensifying near one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, Yemen’s latest offensive could have consequences extending well beyond its borders, particularly for regional security and international shipping.
